When you get peaches, make peach cobbler! A pair of peachy SD70MACs drag coal buckets across the former NP Hi-Line Bridge at Valley City, ND. Opened in 1908 as part of a reworked main across ND, a 3,860' long and 162' tall bridge was required to span the valley.

Burnt/CSX/L&N/Monon Bridge over East Fork White River near Bedford, IN

Someone else posted back in February about this trestle thought I would bring some perspective from the other side of this bridge in Bedford, IN. On this side you have to cross a gate and walk 1/2 a mile or so. This is the one that burned in 2010.

Power Far From Home

Canadian National GP38-2 number 5518 is on the point of a southbound L&N train on the former Monon between Louisville and Chicago. The location is the East Fork White River, just south of Bedford, Indiana.

Dan Meno Great post Carlton! I especially appreciated the video. Can I assume this was an arson fire back in 2010? (if u know) I'm from INDY with family who grew up in Bedford. This trestle is crossing the White River I'm guessing?? Thanks!!

Carlton Crasher Dan Meno it was under suspicion at the same time the tulip trestle in green county caught fire multiple times that year. I'm actually not from the area and i don't know if they ever had a ruling on it. Just a bridge lover and had to stop!

Carlton Crasher Dan Meno yeah same year from what I've read in 2010. CSX was offering a reward for information at the time. From what I've read this line was inactive other than some non CSX trains using it between Bedford and Louisville. CSX supposedly hadn't used it themselves since '93. Definitely nothing going across since 2010 though.

John Wilson I worked on the Old B&O line from Cincinnati to St Louis. From the late 1990s to 2007 we had trains out of Louisville that came through Mitchell, and used Washington, IN as a crew exchange terminal. In 2007, CSX rerouted the trains through Evansville/Vincennes/St Louis. Now, no trains run that way and the line Flora, IL to St Louis is shut down 93 miles.

UP/SP/Texas & New Orleans Pecos River High Bridges near Langtry, TX

The Pecos River gorge has been the location of two of the world's highest bridges: the 1892 Pecos Viaduct and the current structure, its 1944 successor. Increased traffic during World War II necessitated the replacement of this critical link on a major east-west railroad. Though built
under material and labor constraints caused by the war, this 1390'-6"-long continuous steel cantilever truss' austere design is nonetheless in harmony with its remote desert setting. The Pecos River High Bridge is also significant for technical achievements, such as its 275'-high slip-formed concrete piers.

Jeff Baumann Looks like a 5mph wind would just blow it right over! Not enough cross beams for my liking! I'm amazed it's supporting that train.
The record breaking 320'-10 3/4" high 1892 bridge replaced a low bridge built a decade earlier that required 11 torturous miles of track to descend down to river level. [HAER data, p3]

"The second Pecos River High Bridge's structural form allowed it to support greater loads
than its predecessor while using a comparable amount of metal." But it used steel instead of iron. " While a pier ideally would taper uniformly from top to bottom, it would require a great
deal of form work, especially over the 275'-4 1/2" of the Pecos River bridge's tallest pier (pier
C). Modjeski and Masters instead chose slip-forming, a method whereby a short form is moved
upward for another concrete pour when the previous pour reaches sufficient strength. Slipforming required the Pecos River bridge's piers to have "vertical sides, narrowed in occasional
steps."
20 The piers are hollow octagonal shells, to reduce the amount of concrete and speed
curing. In the sloped transition piece at the junction between each shell and the narrower one
above, steel reinforcement is like that found in a reinforced concrete dome.

The photos confirm that the travelling derrick built half the center span, and then they moved the derrick and built from the other direction.

It's sad to see it go but it's been on fire a few times and was beginning to lilt.

At least they replaced it instead of abandoning the line.

There are long tunnels on both sides of the bridge.

Not the most beautiful bridge, but huge. Near Clarion, Pa. Abandoned in the early 80s. There are tunnels on both sides. In the 70s, some friends and I jumped a slow moving coal train and rode over the trestle and thru one of the tunnels. Not my photo.

NS/NKP 1905 and 2018 Bridges over Grand River in Painesville, OH

Norfolk Southern hired two firms in Ohio to design and build a new single track bridge in Painesville, Ohio. HDR Engineering of Cincinnati designed the new bridge and the general contractor building the bridge is Great Lakes Construction Co. of Hinckley, Ohio. The original bridge over the Grand River was built in 1904 by the Nickel Plate Road, later N&W, now Norfolk Southern. The NS line is known as the “B Line” as the mainline extends between Bellevue, Ohio, and Buffalo, N.Y. (Not to be confused with Norfolk Southern's former Southern Ry. “B Line” in Northern Virginia.) The line typically carries 10 to 15 trains daily.
The new bridge consists of 11 spans and is 1,318 feet in length. The substructure includes 10 concrete piers founded on 7-foot diameter drilled shafts. The 26 drilled shafts are between 34 and 93 feet in depth, which includes the rock socket extending into the existing shale. The new piers are made up of 6-foot diameter columns with 8 of the piers also containing reinforced concrete struts to connect the columns. The piers are up to 71 feet in height above the top of drilled shaft elevation. The bridge foundations are being drilled down to bedrock, a distance that ranges from 30 to 100 feet below ground surface.
After completion of the substructure, the superstructure began in spring of 2018. The 10-foot high steel girders are being erected in pairs with the longest spans measuring 180 feet. Two 300 ton capacity cranes will hoist the 230 ton paired girders into place. The new deck consists of precast concrete deck panels tied down to the girders. New steel walkways and inspection grating platforms will be added to the bridge for use by Norfolk Southern Railway maintenance crews. On each side of the bridge, Great Lakes will also build the 2,000-foot approaches consisting of excavation, embankment, drainage, and sub-ballast for the new track alignment across the new bridge. Norfolk Southern crews will perform the track work and cut over the existing tracks to the new alignment so that railway traffic will have access across the new bridge. Finally, the existing bridge will be demolished by Great Lakes, and the rock causeway will be removed restoring the Grand River to its natural condition by the end of 2018. (Most of the preceding was compiled from various local news and construction company sources.)
My photos of the construction progress was shot on July 30th and August 2, 2018. The first two shots were made on July 30th and are from Riverside Dr. at the east end of the project.
The two views looking up from near river level are from E. Walnut Ave./Ohio Rt. 84, which passes under the trestle. The train on the trestle is an NS westbound stack train led by a UP unit. The train caught me by surprise as I hadn't heard any warnings, but it shows the height of the trestle above the Grand River.
The final five shots show the west end of the project and was shot on August 2 from Bank Street.
Riverside High School, my Alma Mater (Class of 1967) is about a quarter mile east of the trestle and I have fond memories of glancing out a couple of classroom windows to watch trains pass when I attended there, so this is a projectof great interest to me.
