Its early Spring 1984 I'm at Hustler tunnel at Hustler Wis on the CNW Elroy St Paul division .By the 1987 the railroad abandoned this section north of Reedsburg Wis to Camp Douglas and now is a bike trail that photographer [Bruce Schwierske ] matched my older shot i took in 1984.

Trail/Aban/C&O/Virginia Central/Blue Ridge Crozet Tunnel

At 15:31 in the S3 E4 episode of the Science Channel's "Mysteries of the Abandoned" series is a presentation about the Crozet Railroad Tunnel. So that motivated me to do some research.

It was started in 1850 as part of Virginia's effort to compete with New York (Erie Canal), Philadelphia (a complex system of canals and inclines), and Baltimore (B&O Railroad) to support Richmond as a port for America's markets on the other side of the mountains, specifically the Blue Ridge Mountains. What is now West Virginia was still part of Virginia in 1850 so the western boarder of the state was the Ohio River. But no railroad was willing to attempt the crossing of the Blue Ridge Mountains because of the expense. So Virginia decided to use public funds to build the 17-mile Blue Ridge Railroad. When finished in 1858, Virginia Central assumed control. In 1868, the Virginia Central merged with the Covington & Ohio to form the Chesapeake & Ohio. In 1873, the 423-mile railroad from Richmond to the Ohio River was finally completed. [BlueRidgeTunnel]

It was dug with two crews, one at each end of the tunnel. The southeast portal is not as pretty as the northern portal.

As you can see in the following diagram, there is a sharp turn at the southeast end. Crozet was the longest of the four tunnels the railroad used to cross the Blue Ridge Mountains.

When completed in 1858, this 4,273' (1,302m) tunnel was the longest in the US and one of the longest in the world. "As the project predated dynamite, the work was done with hand tools and black powder, making it exceedingly slow and dangerous; the average pace of progress was one foot per side per day. It’s pretty amazing, then, that when the two sides finally met in the belly of Afton Mountain on Christmas Day in 1856, they were a mere six inches off perfect alignment. This Blue Ridge Tunnel was used until 1944, when it was replaced by an adjacent parallel tunnel that was able to accommodate larger freight trains. As this new tunnel became known as the Blue Ridge Tunnel, the original was renamed the Crozet Tunnel in honor of the great engineer [who designed and supervised the construction]." [AtlasObscura]

Since dynamite was not patented until 1867, the tunnel was built using black powder in holes dug with hand tools in hard rock. The rock was either granite or even harder metamorphic rock. Hard rock is bad news for the construction workers, but it is good news for those who want to restore it as a trail. Unlike the CGW Winston Tunnel in Illinois, which required continual maintenance by CGW to keep it open, this tunnel is still viable after decades of no maintenance. In the 1950s, a company installed two concrete bulkheads as part of a plan to store gas in the tunnel. But that project was not successful. So one of the tasks for constructing a trail would be to remove those bulkheads.

When you do a Google search, most of the hits are about building a trail through the tunnel. I didn't read the details because the fact that one is being built is the important information. But I gather the construction is not progressing as fast as expected because of funding issues.

SteamPhotos has more details concerning the construction. The TV show explained that the tall horseshoe shape allowed an upper and lower construction face at each end. So there were four construction faces.

Originally built in 1857 for the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad and since controlled by the B & O, it is now a part of CSX. It was shortened and brick lined in 1898. A 1700 foot companion tunnel known as "Little Tunnel" was 'daylighted' (turned into a cut) in 1899. [Bridge Hunter] It was dug for a 6-foot gauge railroad. [IndianaRRtunnels]

Jacob Leukhardt Should be one train a day Mon-Fri. The J783 local. I believe it runs between Mitchel and somewhere east of North Vernon. I believe it only runs one direction a day so for example, if it goes westbound to Mitchel on Monday, it should go east on Tuesday, then back west Wednesday and so on.
Dennis DeBruler Thanks for contributing photos to Bridge Hunter and for taking photos of B&O's CPL signals. One advantage of CSX not liking this B&O route is that they don't have to replace the B&O signals with PTC equipment. (They cut the rail for this route in Illinois.)
Carlton Crasher Dennis DeBruler I thought it odd no one had any more photos of this on bridgehunter. I assume you mean cut by west of Flora? I live in Vincennes and had read that was why we didn't have activity over that bridge much anymore.
Dennis DeBruler I thought it was the segment east of Flora to Olney that they took out of service in 2015. It may technically be back in service now, but that doesn't mean CSX uses it. https://towns-and-nature.blogspot.com/.../flora-il-csxb...

There are long tunnels on both sides of the bridge.

Not the most beautiful bridge, but huge. Near Clarion, Pa. Abandoned in the early 80s. There are tunnels on both sides. In the 70s, some friends and I jumped a slow moving coal train and rode over the trestle and thru one of the tunnels. Not my photo.

CSX/C&O Great Bend Tunnel and John Henry

The Great Bend Tunnel was constructed by the C&O in 1870-72, and it was over a mile long. It made the reputation for John Henry as "the steel driving man" because he had a race with a steam-driven drill. [History of West Virginia Railroads, search for John Henry]

NS/Pennsy 1903 Port Perry Bridge over Monongahela River

I see the north end of this route also quickly enters a tunnel.

This bridge replaced an 1872 structure and reused the original piers. It is part of a route that allows through trains to bypass Pittsburgh. Port Perry was such an important railroad town of 3000 people that it no longer exists. Its land has been completely covered by the tracks of NS, CSX (B&O), and the Union Railroad. [pghbridges]

The purple box indicates that the USACE has progressed on their March 1999 plans quoted below but the bridge clearance has not been raised. Judging from Robert's photo, the span has not been replaced as of 2018.
The pool change associated with the Lower Mon Project will raise navigable waters in existing Pool 2 five (5) feet, thus reducing the vertical clearance of the bridge to 40.6 feet, making it 1.9 feet lower than the U.S. Coast Guard required vertical guide clearance of 42.5 feet....One option preferred by the Corps would replace span 7 (407-foot span between piers 7 and 8) over the navigation channel with a new span constructed of higher strength steel and a modified truss design to achieve the required vertical clearance without changing the rail grades. This option can be achieved through various plans to either rehabilitate or replace Piers 7 and 8 to handle the additional loads of the new span. [pghbridges, search for "1999"]

BNSF/Great Northern Cascade Tunnels

Also known as Stevens Pass Tunnel and GN Cascade #15. In 1900, a 2.6 mile tunnel was built by Great Northern to eliminate 8 switchbacks and avoid winter weather hazards caused by over 50' of snow during the winter including avalanches.  Unfortunately, this tunnel was still too high to avoid the winter weather. "On March 1, 1910, an avalanche at Wellington destroyed two Great Northern trains and killed 96 people. It was one of the worst railroad disasters in American history and closed the route for three weeks.  On January 22, 1916, an avalanche struck a passenger train near Corea, killing eight people and injuring several others. To keep trains on schedule and bolster public confidence, Great Northern added more snow sheds along the route, increasing the annual cost of maintenance and repair." [HistoryLink] To reduce the winter hazards, a new 7.8 mile tunnel was built 501' (or 500' or 502', depending on the source) below the first tunnel. This new tunnel was completed in 1929, and it remains the longest railroad tunnel in the United States.

(new window) The guy taking the video never turns back so that we can't see how much the ears that were cut into the Cascade Tunnel (7.8 miles, the longest train tunnel in the US) clears the double stacks. The square top of the containers is the reason those "ears" were cut. Other tall cars such as autorack cars have curved upper edges so they don't need the "ears" in the tunnels.


"Due to the tunnel's length it has a rather problematic handicap, even today, of requiring ventilation of the shaft for up to 45 minutes. As a result Cascade is somewhat of a bottleneck on the BNSF system." The first ventilation system for the 1929 tunnel required an hour to clear the fumes produced by diesels working hard to scale the 1.7% grade from west to east. Today's fans can clear the tunnel in 20 minutes. "Train speeds today for BNSF freights and Amtrak passenger trains are held to 25 mph. One still has to wonder, however, why Burlington Northern did not exercise its ownership of nearby Snoqualmie Tunnel after the Milwaukee Road abandoned its main line through this region in 1980. Using that bore, which was the best engineered tunnel across the Cascade range, would have saved BN and BNSF millions in maintenance costs and liability." [American-Rails]

The grade is 1.6% and takes 30 minutes to clear the exhaust fumes according to Cascade Tunnel Ventilation. Another eastbound train must wait for the exhaust fumes to be blown out of the tunnel. But a westbound train does not have to wait because the exhaust of the previous eastbound train will stay in front of the westbound train. The exhaust plume of the westbound train leaves the tunnel with the train so neither the next eastbound nor westbound train is delayed.
In a discussion on the Trainorders forum, a former Chief Dispatcher for BN who was in charge of the line through the Cascade Tunnel said that the Tunnel Ventilation issue being a limiting factor on line capacity is a bunch of Horsefeathers. If it was a problem, then adding a mid-tunnel door like the Mount MacDonald Tunnel on CP has would solve the problem at a reasonable cost. The problem is the gradient through the tunnel and the distance between the sidings at either end. If the freight trains were the length of the Empire Builder and powered the same amount, you could operate a lot more trains per day through the tunnel. Where some problems with ventilating occur, they happen because the Dispatcher doesn't begin the ventilation promptly. This can happen because the Dispatcher is distracted by things happening elsewhere on his district, or if he (she) just isn't paying attention. And then there is the need for MOW to have track time, not just on the tunnel itself, but also anywhere between Skykomish and Wenatchee. [Trains, search for "2009 9:25"]

To build the 1929 tunnel, a work tunnel 8' high and 9' wide was first built and 21 connecting passages were dug to the main bore so that there was 42 working faces. 1,750 skilled workmen from around the country were hired to staff three shifts that worked seven days a week for 35 months. The blasting holes were 8' deep. After a blast the loose rock was cleared out using ore cars in the working tunnel. Each round took five hours. The tunnel was dug through granite, but they still used timber shoring. Even with the shoring, there were deaths due to rock slides. The concrete lining was constructed by placing reusable forms over the timbers and pouring concrete over them. Because of the length of the tunnel; cars filled with the correct ratio of cement, sand and gravel were hauled to a mixing plant at the face of the concrete work. "Some 923,000 cubic yards of rock and earth were removed from the bore, replaced by 264,000 cubic yards of concrete as lining for the tunnel." [HistoryLink]

The tunnel was electrified, but they had significant reliability issues with the electrification. One source indicated the system was not properly designed. As soon as the railroad finished converting to diesels in 1956, the electrification was replaced by a ventilation system at the east portal.

(Bridge Hunter) Bridge Hunter calls it Winslow Valley, but Willow Valley is much closer.

Tunnel dug in 1899 to straighten the route and eliminate seven stream crossings. Part of the line originally built as the Ohio & Mississippi Cincinnati to St. Louis route. If you look hard you might be able to determine the older right of way. [Bridge Hunter]

Patrick Cavanaugh how much traffic is on this line currently ?John Hamilton Local only, if any. It was once a major B&O, then CSX mainline from Cincinnati to East St. Louis. No through traffic now and the route is actually cut beyond Flora, IL.
