Trail/Aban/C&O/Virginia Central/Blue Ridge Crozet Tunnel

At 15:31 in the S3 E4 episode of the Science Channel's "Mysteries of the Abandoned" series is a presentation about the Crozet Railroad Tunnel. So that motivated me to do some research.

It was started in 1850 as part of Virginia's effort to compete with New York (Erie Canal), Philadelphia (a complex system of canals and inclines), and Baltimore (B&O Railroad) to support Richmond as a port for America's markets on the other side of the mountains, specifically the Blue Ridge Mountains. What is now West Virginia was still part of Virginia in 1850 so the western boarder of the state was the Ohio River. But no railroad was willing to attempt the crossing of the Blue Ridge Mountains because of the expense. So Virginia decided to use public funds to build the 17-mile Blue Ridge Railroad. When finished in 1858, Virginia Central assumed control. In 1868, the Virginia Central merged with the Covington & Ohio to form the Chesapeake & Ohio. In 1873, the 423-mile railroad from Richmond to the Ohio River was finally completed. [BlueRidgeTunnel]

It was dug with two crews, one at each end of the tunnel. The southeast portal is not as pretty as the northern portal.

As you can see in the following diagram, there is a sharp turn at the southeast end. Crozet was the longest of the four tunnels the railroad used to cross the Blue Ridge Mountains.

When completed in 1858, this 4,273' (1,302m) tunnel was the longest in the US and one of the longest in the world. "As the project predated dynamite, the work was done with hand tools and black powder, making it exceedingly slow and dangerous; the average pace of progress was one foot per side per day. It’s pretty amazing, then, that when the two sides finally met in the belly of Afton Mountain on Christmas Day in 1856, they were a mere six inches off perfect alignment. This Blue Ridge Tunnel was used until 1944, when it was replaced by an adjacent parallel tunnel that was able to accommodate larger freight trains. As this new tunnel became known as the Blue Ridge Tunnel, the original was renamed the Crozet Tunnel in honor of the great engineer [who designed and supervised the construction]." [AtlasObscura]

Since dynamite was not patented until 1867, the tunnel was built using black powder in holes dug with hand tools in hard rock. The rock was either granite or even harder metamorphic rock. Hard rock is bad news for the construction workers, but it is good news for those who want to restore it as a trail. Unlike the CGW Winston Tunnel in Illinois, which required continual maintenance by CGW to keep it open, this tunnel is still viable after decades of no maintenance. In the 1950s, a company installed two concrete bulkheads as part of a plan to store gas in the tunnel. But that project was not successful. So one of the tasks for constructing a trail would be to remove those bulkheads.

When you do a Google search, most of the hits are about building a trail through the tunnel. I didn't read the details because the fact that one is being built is the important information. But I gather the construction is not progressing as fast as expected because of funding issues.

SteamPhotos has more details concerning the construction. The TV show explained that the tall horseshoe shape allowed an upper and lower construction face at each end. So there were four construction faces.

CSX/C&O Great Bend Tunnel and John Henry

The Great Bend Tunnel was constructed by the C&O in 1870-72, and it was over a mile long. It made the reputation for John Henry as "the steel driving man" because he had a race with a steam-driven drill. [History of West Virginia Railroads, search for John Henry]

CSX/C&O+HV 1917 Bridge over Ohio River at Sciotoville in Portsmouth, OH

The seldom-photographed Sciotoville (Limeville) Bridge towers above a CSX train of 129 empty coal hoppers. The shot was taken from on top of the parapet at the south side of the bridge.

A coal train makes it way westbound (TT Direction) with coal destined for points north as the final light of day is setting over the Ohio River. A scene like this only makes me reflect on a time when it was possible to see C&O Superpower haul miles of black diamonds along this route. What a sight that would have been to see.
"This bridge held the record for longest continuous truss span [775'] in the world from its opening until 1945. See April 2000 Trains Magazine for an article on this bridge." One side was built on falsework. Then the cantilever design allowed the other side to be built with minimal falsework because the first side was available to balance it. But the forces on the joints changed between the initial truss structure on the first side and the final cantilevered truss so hydraulic jacks were needed to join some of the members for riveting. The following catches the center pier completed, wooden piers used as falsework, a travelling gantry on the false work to build the supported span, and a creeper hoist on the other side of the center pier to build the suspended span.

A pictorial summary of the construction stages. As the suspended span grew, they could remove some of the false work under the supported span because it was being held up by the weight of the suspended span. Reducing the number of falsework piers in the river was important in the Winter to reduce the impact of ice flows on the falsework.

A couple miles east of Portsmouth, OH, is CSX's massive Sciotoville Bridge, a two-span, 1,550-foot continuous truss bridge over the Ohio River. The structure, the heaviest continuous truss bridge on the continent, was designed by David Steinman and built by Gustav Lindenthal between 1914-17 for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. (April 05, 2004)

Aban/CR/Penn, Trail/CSX/C&O and NS/NKP Bridges over the White River in Muncie, IN

The bridges are listed in the order that we see them in the 3D Satellite Image, i.e. going upstream.

A 2009 photo that includes all three bridges. Since we are looking at the north ends, the bridges are in the "upstream order."

Evidence of our railroading here in Muncie, IN. Believe these bridges were taken out of use back in the early 70s. Hope I'm remembering correctly....Believe they were used by the Pennsylvania RR {Must have been trackage rights. Nearest PA. RR connection back when, was west of here at Anderson, IN. This line went north out of Muncie to Gaston. I believe the plan was for it to reach Chicago....But believe that did not happen. These twin span bridges appear they could last another 100 yrs. if the supports under them stay in place. I'm standing on another former RR bridge that is now part of a very lengthy Trail....And it's paved. Believe this was last operated by CSX...Again, back several decades ago. Amtrak traveled this route from Chicago and points southeast. Photo is looking northwest. Believe Amtrak last run thru here in the late 70s. I used to see it occasionally and some times on purpose...You know.....the railfan in us.....Our Munice station on that line was beautifully renovated when it went back into service of being a Major structure on that route as a Trail Head. I'll eventually get a photo on here of how it appears now.
Jeffrey Stoveken The bridge on which you are standing is former C & O. After C & O it was Chessie and was used by Amtrak up to 1985. I am not sure of the history of the bridge you photographed but believe you are correct that it was PRR.

Dennis DeBruler I have a map that shows the Pennsy route was a branch winding its way down from Converse, IN, through small towns to terminate at Ball Brothers. Pennsy was probably careful to use small, light diesels on this branch. That would be why an 1885 truss has not been replaced.
The Penn bridge featured in the above photo is an old (1885) pin connected bridge. But the laced eyebars indicates Pennsy did some reinforcement of the bridge. This Pennsy branch went through little towns and terminated in Muncie at the Ball Brothers plant. So probably only lighter locomotives like a GP7 used it.

I couldn't find a construction date for the NKP bridge.

Aban/C&O/CC&L 1902 Bridge over Grand Calumet River in Hammond, IN

Tyler Haack posted four photos with the comment: "Old swing bridge near Sohl Avenue in Hammond, Indiana, which was abandoned by Norfolk Southern in the 1980s. Pictures were taken in April of this year.[2018]"

When I read in Tyler's comment that the bridge was abandoned by Norfolk Southern, I assumed it was some sort of industrial branch for either the 4th District of the Wabash or for the Nickle Plate. Both Bridge Hunter and Historic Bridges agree that the original owner was Chicago, Cincinnati & Louisville Railroad. The CC&L was formed in 1904 by combining three railroads. It went bankrupt in 1908 and was bought by C&O in 1910 as their C&O of Indiana subsidiary. [jjakucyk] So Historic Bridges ownership of CSX seems to be correct and Tyler and Bridge Hunter claiming it is owned by NS seems to be wrong.

C&O joined the Erie just before Griffith Junction and shared its route and the NKP bridge to get to the C&WI at State Line Junction. The Erie+C&WI route was for passenger trains. Reading the description below, maybe this bridge was used by a route for C&O's freight trains that went north to access the B&OCT tracks that went to the Rockwell Street Yard.
Chicago, Cincinnati and Louisville Railroad chartered 11/1/1866 as
reorganization of Cincinnati, Peru and Chicago Railroad. Built from
Peru to La Porte, and the Indianapolis, La Porte and Michigan City
Railroad continued from La Porte to Michigan City. Plans were to use
the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway from La Porte to Chicago;
not clear if it did. If it used the Pere Marquette it would have
joined in Michigan City. Not sure where it would have joined the Monon
if it ever used that; maybe that was on the later alignment from Hammond.

Cincinnati and Indiana Western Railroad and Cincinnati, Richmond and
Muncie Railroad chartered in Ohio and Indiana to build the line
between Cincinnati and Griffith (the junction with the Erie
southeast of Hammond). Both consolidated with the CC&L 6/1/1903. Once
completed, terminated at Hammond (or Griffith?) for several years.

Hammond Belt Railway chartered 1906 in Illinois and opened 4/6/1907
(?), from the CC&I in Hammond (which crossed the Erie and everything
else at Griffith and ran parallel to the Erie to south of the
Michigan Central Railroad crossing) west and northwest to the Indiana
Harbor Belt Railroad at Louisville Junction. (The 1913 map does a
great job of showing the line; short parts of grading can be seen on
topo maps.) Ran over the IHB to Dolton, then over the CC&I's own track
from just wets of Dolton to the IC just south of Riverdale, then over
the IC to Central Station.

Reorganized 7/6/1910 as Chesapeake and Ohio Railway of Indiana.
12/1/1910 began using the Erie from Hammond to State Line and the C&WI
to Dearborn. 3/1/1925 began using the Nickel Plate from a connecting
track somewhere between the Michigan Central crossing and State Line
to the IC south of Grand Crossing (connecting track shown on
http://70.121.38.224/Chicago%20Division/jpegs/113.jpg ) and the IC to
Central Station.

By 1945, service was cut back to Hammond, with transfers advertised to
the Monon, Erie or South Shore. Later stopped running altogether.
