Illinois Railways/Illinois Railnet

BNSF sold four segments of its CB&Q ancestry to Illinois Railnet between 1997 and 2004. In 2005, Omnitrax bought those segments from North American Railnet and renamed it Illinois Railways. [IlliniRail]

The section between Ottawa and Montgomery has been significantly improved because Omnitrax has plowed at least some of  its revenue from sand trains back into maintenance. The sand mines around Ottawa produce sand with a grain size and hardness that makes it ideal for fraking oil and gas wells.

The corporate ancestor of the Mongomery to Streator segment was Ottawa, Oswego & Fox River Valley. The segment between Ottawa and Streator is now used to store cars. Labeling Streator as an interchange station is marketing hype.

Milwaukee had trackage rights over the Flagg Center to Rockford segment. But Milwaukee is now gone.

Zearing to LaSalle is a remnant of the corporate ancestor Illinois Valley and Northern Railroad. The branch to the east north of I-80 was bought by Peru, IL when another railroad abandoned it. Peru contracts with Illinois Railways to operate it.

I don't know why Mt. Morris is important.

Mondelez/Nabisco Chicago and Naperville plants are still rail served

Neither plant ships via rail anymore, but both still receive bulk supplies via rail. BRC serves the Chicago Plant, and BNSF/CB&Q serves the Naperville Plant.

(Satellite)  Google Maps seems to be broken this week. It is not offering a 3D view nor street views from Ogden. The photos on the map site imply that this plant makes Oreos. But I don't believe that is true because they were made in the Chicago plant described below. I have not been able to determine what this plant makes.

The plant is well landscaped in front so trees hide an overall view of the front of the plant. But the main building is tall enough that you can see above the Land Rover dealer that it still has its Nabisco signs even though it is now owned by Mondelez. You can barely see the second sign on the stairway enclosure on the right.

I drove around the (big) block to see what I could find concerning its rail service. From Jefferson Avenue I could see the fall protector and a covered hopper car. There are storage silos behind the trees on the right.

I've seen a reference to delivering wheat, not flour, to the plant. So I digitally zoomed in on the hopper car. It has three bays instead of five, so it is a delivering wheat instead of flour. That means the plant does its own milling. That would explain why it has so many storage silos compared to Pepperidge Farm that receives flour and normally pneumatically transfers the flour from a car directly to its baking machinery.

This is the best view I got of the silos from the road.
Once again, a satellite image is more useful. Not only is there a hidden eleventh silo, the hoses going to each silo indicate they a pneumatically loaded.

In my drive around the "block," I pulled into a parking lot to take a photo (below) of the south side of a cut of four cars. A satellite image (right) also has four cars on the spur between the receiving lead and Jefferson Avenue. The tall trees in the background of the photo mark where a remnant of the shipping lead still exists. Stephen Schmidt in a comment on one of my Facebook postings explained: "305 is up there five nights a week to spot wheat loads. Pretty large customer for Eola."


BNSF now uses the remnant of the shipping lead as their "Nabisco Yard." Here we see the ballast regulator and tamper of a tie replacement crew parked in that yard. There is a lot more equipment hidden by the trees that is parked further down on the lead.

While I was in the corner of a parking lot, I caught the turnout for the receiving lead and the north side of a cut of seven hoppers parked on the spur. The jointed track is getting rather wavy.

Since I'm a railfan, not a shiny-sheet-metal-in-front-of-a-train fan, here is the entire photo where we can see a stack of jointed rail on the left side and a couple of ribbons on the right.

Those ribbons look like they are about 150' long, which means they probably came from a crossing replacement. Below, on the left side of the photo, are the rails they pulled off M1 on Nov 8, 2018 from the Main Street crossing in Downers Grove, IL. The flexibility of even heavyweight rail continues to amaze me. (I'm sure that BNSF installs only their best rail on the Racetrack because commuters and Amtrak run 70mph through here and a lot of heavy freight runs at 40mph.)

I deliberately turned my camera to the left to take the above photo that included the scrap rail after I took this photo that included the replacement track for the M3 work.

Since the receiving leads cross the driveway to the shipping docks, David caught an up close view of #2380. Of particular note is the Remote Control Equipment sign under the number. I did not know that BNSF (actually, their unions) allows remote control. It is quite common within companies that have their own locomotive such as the steel mills in Northwest Indiana. The H1 livery means that it is an older model. The Diesel Shop indicates #2380 is a GP38-2 built in 1978. Local freights are the railroading equivalent of putting a horse out to pasture because they spend most of their time idling or going slow and because they don't stray too far away from repair shops. I've even seen photos of Sante Fe and BN liveries in local trains.

(Nabisco Satellite; Mondelez Satellite)

If you look through the photos on the satellite pages, you will see shipping containers parked at the loading bays (e.g. Hug Group). So this plant probably ships some product over 500 miles away. I wonder if it supplies the entire country. But it looks like they still receive corn syrup (grey tank cars) and flour (white hoppers) in bulk by rail. (I don't know what would be in the black tank car and the red, 3-bay hopper car.)

The South Chicago Job has finished its air test and is on the move at Kedzie Avenue in Chicago, a little east of Hayford Junction. With a big train, a pair of hard working SD40-3's was just what the doctor ordered. In the background, the Nabisco Bakery Job can be seen preparing to tie onto its pick-up with a GP23-ECO in charge. Once tied on, the Bakery Job would make the short trip back home to Clearing Yard.

I wonder if they have their own switcher because the track next to the plant is just a staging area. The flour is unloaded inside the plant.

Mondelez bought Nabisco, but they have been slow to change the signs on their buildings because Americans recognize the Nabisco brand. If they do recognize Mondelez, it is probably because they built new Oreo Cookie production lines in Mexico instead of in this plant. Plus, it has to be expensive to replace that sign on the side of the building. The move of Oreo production to Mexico in 2016 caused about half of the 1,200 workers to be laid off. The cookie was first made in New York City in 1912, and this plant had been churning them out since 1953.

CB&Q's Chicago & Iowa Railroad

It seems different maps have different mistakes. But, if you look at enough maps, you can become confident of the railroad's route.

This map provides an overview of where the railroad was from the perspective of Oregon, IL. But the east end is wrong because the route went through Rochelle. In fact, the segment of the C&I between Oregon and Rochelle was chartered in 1857 as Ogle & Carroll County Railroad and reached Oregon in 1871. This gave Oregon access to the railroad network with a connection to the C&NW in Rochelle. James Frederick Joy included this segment in the Burlington & Michigan Central that ran from Aurora (CB&Q connection) to Forreston (IC connection) in 1872. By 1874, Francis Hinkley had built the Chicago, Rockford & Northern 24 miles from Flagg Center to Rockford. Both of these segments became consolidated as the Chicago & Iowa Railroad. In 1885, the Chicago Burlington & Northern was chartered and its construction from Oregon to St. Paul, MN was completed in 1886. Oregon itself was a destination because it promoted itself as a resort town. [OregonDepot]

This 1874 map correctly shows the C&I route going through Rochelle, but it also shows the line extended west from Forreston to Bellevue, IA. I have determined that line is a mistake. There is a "CH & IA" label along the route between Oregon and Rochelle. But it also shows the "CH&RRR" (as best as I can read it) shared the route between Shabbona and Aurora. I included the routes all the way down to Galesburg to show the original CB&Q line. Note the lines through Shabbona and the Illinois Grand Trunk Railway west of Mendota have yet to be acquired by CB&Q.

Rochelle simplifies the corporate history and confirms the Chicago & Iowa Railroad was built through Rochelle in 1870.

The reason for the branch up to Rockford is interesting. Rockford enjoyed an early railroad connection because the Galena & Chicago Union arrived in 1852. But in just four years Rockford's businessmen thought the rates were too high and worked to break G&CU's railroad monopoly. In 1857 they received a charter for the Kenosha & Rockford Railroad. In spite of an economic depression, the railroad entered town in 1859. But Chicago & North Western absorbed both railroads serving Rockford. In 1874, F. E. Hinkley, the president of the C&I, proposed a branch from Rochelle to Rockford to break the C&NW monopoly. [Rockford]


The segment from Oregon to Aurora is now part of BNSF's mainline to St. Paul and the Northwest Pacific. The branch to Rockford is now part of the Illinois Railway. My 2005 SPV Map shows the segment between Mt. Morris and Forreston has been abandoned. There are still tracks between Oregon and Mt. Morris, but a pile of dirt next to the parking lot on the industrial spur does not bode well for rail service. The grain elevator does not have rail service. So it appears the segment west of Oregon is no longer used.

ABS (CB&Q) 1911 Bridge over Missouri River in Kansas, MO

ABS stands for Armour, Swift, Burlington.

This was a dual deck bridge that carried tracks on the lower deck and, initially, a trolley on the upper deck with road outriggers from the upper deck. Later, the trolley was replaced by two more (skinny) lanes of traffic. Except for the navigation span, the tracks were in a through truss and the trolley was on a deck truss. For the navigation span, the trolley was in a through truss and the tracks were on a deck that hung from that truss via steel columns called hangers.

 NS transfer run crosses the Armour-Swift-Burlington draw bridge, in Kansas City, Mo. This is a pretty unique span. The truss sits above what used to be the highway deck, and the vertical plate columns would lift the track girders to the required height. The highway was moved, about 25 years ago, but the railroad portion, obviously, still moves along.

On top of the navigation channel truss, above each hanger, was a sheave (pulley). On both sides of each portal was a drum with grooves. On each side of the adjacent road deck was a line of sheaves. These sheaves allowed steel cables to be strung from the top of each hanger to its own counterweight. (Actually, the end of the suspended deck must have had a couple of cables going directly to the suspended deck without a hanger because I don't see a hanger and I see two smaller counterweights.

The portal photo below shows the road configuration after the trolley tracks had been removed.

This closeup shows how the cables passed over the end of the bridge. The shaft on the right goes into the machinery house. There are gaps between the cables compared to the number of groves in the drum because each cable is wrapped more than one revolution around the drum and then connected to a counterweight. This provides enough friction so that this powered drum can raise and lower the track deck. (The counterweights should be adjusted so that it takes about the same amount of power to lower the deck as it does to raise it. I know when they paint a drawbridge in Chicago they have to adjust the counterweights to compensate for the change of the bridge weight caused by the paint job.) It appears that two steel cables are used for each hanger/counterweight connection.

Initially, the deck could be raised in 50 seconds, but due to the age and condition of the machinery, it now [1984] takes about three minutes. The synchronization of the two sets of machinery at either end is handled by a counterweighted rope drive connecting opposite motor shafts. The motors are connected electrically and both operate simultaneously. In case either should be out of service, the lifting deck can be operated by a single motor from either end, the machinery at the opposite end being operated through the rope drive. Limit switches cut off the current to the motors and apply the brakes near each limit of movement. [HAER, p10]

Coming home, today, and the old ASB draw bridge, across the Missouri River, in Kansas City, was raised (all the other spans were open, as well). This isn't a frequent event, and I've never been fortunate enough to have seen it.

Blair Denny When I worked for the KCS as a conductor and engineer, we delivered empty coal trains to BNSF Murray Yard in North Kansas City from the KCS's Knoche Yard in Kansas City over this structure. (More often we were routed over the Kansas City Terminal and BNSF along the Bluff Track to the Hannibal Bridge.) This photo of the ASB Bridge is looking north over the Missouri River. The large span over the river's channel lifts vertically.

In this view, I am standing on the Prescott, WI side. This bridge can be a serious bottleneck as its double track on both ends. This is BNSF's Twin Cities to Galesburg, IL mainline. At Galesburg, IL, BNSF comes in from 6 different directions in to a massive hump yard (most traffic continues to Chicago).

Priority traffic heads east to Rochelle and Aurora. Freights drop south thru Denrock, Barstow, Colona, Orion, Rio, Galesburg. South from Plum River is also old Q.
I havent beeb south of 
Savannah to Galesburg yet. Track looks really good on Google maps. I saw an auto rack train at Gburg, a rail train near Rio, on Google satellite. All I could tell you is the amount of traffic that runs through Rochelle on BNSF is nowhere near what runs out of the Twin Cities.

CB&Q+NC&StL+IC Bridge over Ohio River at Metropolis, IL

Note the far (Kentucky side) span is longer. At the time, it was a record long 720' simple span. The other four spans are "just" 551'.

I have noticed that when you take I-57 to Kentucky you pass under a BN overpass in the southern part of the state. This surprised me when I first saw it because the motto of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy was "Everywhere West." Not South. Like the Milwaukee Road, CB&Q wanted their own access to coal in the Ohio River valley. In fact, James J. Hill, who aquired control the of CB&Q in 1901 could use the coal for his other railroads --- Great Northern and Northern Pacific.
So, in 1904 Burlington acquired a 122 mile line from Concord, IL to Centralia, IL. In 1905 the CB&Q began pushing towards Metropolis to link up with the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railroad (NC&StL) in Paducah. CB&Q reached Metropolis in 1910. The Paducah & Illinois Railroad (P&I) was formed of a partnership between CB&Q and NC&StL to build a mile long bridge over the Ohio and 15 miles of track to connect the 2 Railroads. [Part 1]
Burlington specified a double track bridge that would support Cooper E90 live loading. This showed significant foresight because E90 (90,000 pounds per axle (Army)) is a strong bridge by even today's standards. [Part 2, ConnDOT, WiscDOT]  The trusses and approach bents support two tracks, but the approach plate girder spans currently support just one track. As I have come to expect with long train bridges, trains travel slowly over this bridge.
A complicating factor at the Metropolis site was that bedrock was approximately 230 feet below low water level. This depth prohibited founding the piers on the bedrock, instead the piers are founded on a thick quartz sand layer at approximately 75 feet below low water level. Founding the piers on a substrate that could allow them to settle over time prohibited many bridge designs. CB&Q Chose to build a Simple Truss Bridge designed and built using Silicon Steel instead of the normal High Carbon Steel and specifying an even stronger nickel steel for certain members of the bridge allowing the bridge to be made lighter. The rivermen were allowed to specify the placement of the piers. They specified a 700' navigation span [part10] When they learned that the engineers designed a span over 700', the rivermen decided: "By having the main span 720 feet in width, a steamboat with a large tow will be able to pass under the bridge at any angle. With lights on the piers at night the span will be sufficient width to enable the pilots to judge his distance and pass under the bridge." [part12]

If you have seen one of the 551' spans, you have seen them all.

It is hard to catch how much bigger the 720' span is from the Illinois side. This does catch the unique "stepped" design of the piers. The lower part is probably thicker to resist ice and flood waters.

Even the approach is rather massive.
